“On the 7th of March, 1788, the county was reorganized and eight towns formed, of which Washington was one; named in honor of that noble general whom the world reveres. The act defining the boundaries of the town is as follows:

 

‘All that part of the said County of Duchess bounded southerly by the town of Beekman, westerly by Poughkeepsie and Clinton (now Pleasant Valley) northerly by the north bounds of a tract of land called the Lower or Great Nine Partners, and easterly by the easternmost line of lot laid out in the general division heretofore made of the said tract of land called Lower and Great Nine Partners shall be, and hereby is erected into a town by the name of Washington.’”
